Grimanesa Neuhaus was born in Lima, Peru in 1954. She studied at the German School of the Ursuline Nuns before graduating with a degree in psychology from the Catholic Pontificate University of Peru. She did her thesis on creativity, suggesting a natural link to the world of art. Courses in ceramics, drawing, graphic arts, Peruvian flora, and pre-Columbian iconography have instilled within her a proud sense of native design. Since 1976 she has been giving workshops on the varied ceramics of different regions of Peru, based in her own studio, La Candelaria. Her work combines ancient motifs and colonial design, complemented by artisanal expressions of Peru’s natural wonders.
